After 10 long months of waiting, it’s official. We have a Christmas tree!!
Since we have been married, John and I have never actually had a real Christmas tree. I bought a small 3 foot artificial white tree when I lived in the apartment, as I couldn’t stand the thought of having to clean tree sap out of the carpet, and we just stuck with that one up until this year.
Now that we have the space, we knew we had to make up for lost time!
One of the very first daydreams I had about living in this house before we actually owned it, was having a tall, beautiful and REAL Christmas tree. When I mean tall, I mean at least 10 feet. Growing up, my family always had a super tall tree that our 20 foot ceiling in the living room could hold. So for me its just not Christmas time without a big ol’ smelly Frasier Fir in the house.
John is from a real tree family as well, so he was able to look past the convenience and practicality of a nice artificial tree with me. John was all about a huge real tree.
We went to a local lot near our house that is set up every year by TROSA. Everyone was so nice and they make the process so easy. They carried it, trimmed it, put it in the stand, made sure it was straight, wrapped it up, and put it on the car! Literally, all we had to do was pick the tree, pay for it, and drive away.
We ended up chosing a beautiful 11 foot tree that was not too big and not too small, it was just right. Getting in the front door only took a little bit of cursing but we eventually figured out our angles and then John did his manly duty and turned on the indie christmas music station (only for a little while though, John can only handle so much Zooey Deschanel), drank egg nog and strung up the lights.
This is where our first major decision came up. White or colored lights? I wanted to go with warm white lights. I think they are simple, classic and really let your ornaments shine. However, John is a big fan of the multi-colored lights. So we made our first Christmas compromise with some white lights accented with some large-bulbed retro colored lights.
We finished it off with some teal, orange and silver ornaments, as well as some glittery and sentimental ones.
We really love it. It’s fun, it has a little bit of both of our personalities, and it just makes the whole house feel Christmas-y.
