Now that the warm weather is finally here, John and I are gearing up to open all the windows and finally FINISH refinishing the stairs this weekend.
Back in November we ripped out the carpet and pulled out about a million staples. We exposed paint in some places it shouldn’t have been (the treads) and in places it should have been but wasn’t (the stringers). Overall, it wasn’t a pretty site.
We also decided that we wanted to expose the wood on the back and bottom of the treads too. We removed the paint with a gel stripper that smelled like oranges. Many painful hours later it was done, and the house smelled like a Floridian citrus grove for days.
We lightly sanded the treads and the stringer to prepare them for the new stain and paint. Then we stopped….for 4 MONTHS. So since then, the stairs have looked like this:
Not too shabby….but still pretty shabby. The treads still deserve a fresh staining and a coat of polyurethane. While the stringers need to be painted to hide where the old carpet use to sit.
We have been excitedly waiting for the chance to finish off this project, and we think the pay off is going to be big. We are also hoping the end result will convince us to refinish the loft floor to match. Remember when we ripped up that carpet almost a whole year ago?
So that’s what we are up to this weekend. Is there a project you have been waiting on until the timing, weather, etc is just right?
